Nobility is about the content of character, morality, sense of justice and above all in Indo European culture, bravery in war.
The way you'd get a nobility title as a peasant was by distinguishing yourself in battle.
Of course, over the centuries it degenerated, nobles became decadent and then richfags with shitty character wanted power so financed and orchestrated the french revolution which is basically the globohomo bourgeoisie seizing power from the old nobility, money taking over bravery/morality. That's when everything went to shit exponentially faster.
See, your question is itself a good indication of the time, people can't even conceive anymore something other than money being the token to power.
Also on the question of land ownership, Evola explains very well why it land should be considered sacred and not purchasable with money. It has to remain tied to nobility. Peasants can get "rich" but shouldn't own their land. The land belong to the guy who fought for it and can crush the skull of the next guy trying to take it.
