I don't understand why people freak out over the Aztec sacrifices. Most were captured enemy soldiers, they were gonna be executed anyway, why not offer it to their gods?
Europeans also killed a bunch of people in arguably more gruesome ways. What makes this so "savage"?

Look into their god Tlaloc. He was a rain god that mothers were given financial compensation to offer up their children to.
They believed the tears of these children were an omen of a good rainy season and so the priests went out of their way to make their death as prolonged and agonizing as possible.

If you were a war prisoner, you'd probably be sacrificed to Huizalopochli and you'd just be covered in flowers and your beating heart cut out.
You might also be sacrificed to Tezcatlipoca and before to fight mock gladiator battles wielding fake wooden weapons while pitted up against fully geared Aztec warriors.
Either way it's better than being one of the children whose own mother sold to be tortured to death.

Is it that different than an entire population being forced by their government to send their teenage sons to die in a trench in a war though? More theatrical maybe. Would you rather be ritualistic sacrificed by a high-priest at a temple or in a muddy ditch by another scared child for the benefit of banksters, the high-priests of finance? I can't decide which is worse really. Civilization in general seems evil when I start thinking along these lines.
