Why is America, despite having one of the highest birth-rates in the developed world (sitting at 1.65 vs around 1.4 for Europe and 1.1 for Asia) the nation that is also the most vocal about birthrates declining?
From politicians to everyday people, lowered population numbers is the single biggest issue to a lot of them, when it feels like nowhere else is this the case. Even in a nation like South Korea that has less than HALF the birthrate of America the most politicians seem to do is organize government funded dating-events a few times a year.

The reason is economic but you've got it wrong. Children used to be an investment, back when there was a shitload of domestic work to be done in households/farms or the family trade. And then they'd take care of you when you're old because nobody else would. None of this applies now. Kids aren't allowed to work even if you could find enough jobs for them and the government (someone else children via taxation) will take care of you when you're old.
Plenty of working professionals today in the mid 20s-40 range could easily afford several kids if they made lifestyle sacrifices, but they don't want to. Maybe biological urges and boredom will eventually make them pop out 1-2 before infertility, but they *could* afford many more, if it was their main goal in life.
