There was a time when this made sense. Manifest destiny built something incredible.
But eventually, you end up with an atavistic, retrograde culture of laggards who value magical thinking above improving their lot in life. This warrior culture lost a war, defending obsolete, unprofitable technology (slavery) against a "bunch of sissies" who industrialised.
It's similar to what happened in Japan. Japan mastered the art of warrior culture to a level thought impossible. But they eventually lost to a superior foe. The difference is that Japan had the Meiji restoration and modernised like crazy, while the southern US doubled down on their backwardness. And to this day, the south is defending obsolete, unprofitable technology like coal.
