The books are much less retarded than the show, and the characterization doesn't take a nosedive in the books. Their problem is that GRRM clearly doesn't know how to get from where he is now to the end state he has planned, and so they end up being a little meandering and attempt to fix problems by constantly adding new characters, which only creates more problems. They're good if you like worldbuilding, but definitely feel like they're spinning their wheels without getting anywhere and the MCs kind of have plot armor to ensure that they get to the endgame.

I read them a looong time ago, 2011 was when I finally finished them. They were fun, but I think Danarys was a bad idea from the start. It's just not as fun to spend time across the sea. The only intrigue is in Westeros.

Dany is okay, she has some absolute kino moments and getting a taste of what's going on across the sea is a breath of fresh air. The problem is that too many of her chapters just drag on pointlessly and drop too much world building and go nowhere. Also her character arc kind of sucks because she never actually seems to learn anything.

All the other across the sea characters for whom we get POV chapters kind of suck though and really should have been cut.

Barristan is one of the best characters in the series and his chapters are kino. The way the show fucked him over should have been a big red flag to everyone that things were going to go to shit.
