"Extremely close" is not supported by evidence. Epstein's job was to befriend rich, influential people, and that he did, but if anybody had any dirt on Trump, we would be hearing it from the NPC media 24/7, which has not happened, meaning that whatever understanding Trump had of Epstein, he was not interested in what he had to offer.

What we see now is simply a man that chose to fear men rather than God.

Personally, I think Donald's relationship with Epstein was about procuring copies of the blackmail materials for his future run for the Presidency. And I think the associate of Dershowitz, who wished to stay anonymous, and who was interviewed by the FBI in NYC in 2005(?) during Epstein's first arrest and trial was Donald, and this is a major reason why he's hated by so many high-level establishment types.
