The only real word for it is soda. Or more correctly, sodawater. Here, it's sodavand - vand is water. "pop" sounds stupid, and coke is only coca cola.

I grew up in the south and everybody knows that "Coke" refers to a specific brand. Using "coke" to refer to soda in general seems like more of a retarded boomer thing and that's probably why it's dying out

Which is a weird thing to call it, since it's literally harder on the tongue if it's fizzy. Water without sparkles is much softer to the tongue than water with. Should be hard water, if anything.

It was apparently still common in East Texas into the '90s and '00s, at least according to my DFW native ex-GF, who's 40 now.

Coke is fucking retarded! I am tired of going down to all these states and arguing with a dumb nigger at McDonalds about what kind of coke is Coca-Cola. If you hate costals call it pop. I never have this problem telling a spic who barely speaks English in California what kind of pop coke is. Some even understand when I say pop I am talking about soda.

I think it comes form alchohol. Hard being alcholic, soft being not.

"Soft" is an American colloquialism for "non-alcoholic." It goes the other way too, as in "Mike's Hard Lemonade" which is a very mild and low-ABV drink but still "hard" compared to normal lemonade with no alcohol at all.

Makes sense. But still, when the fizz hits my tongue, "soft" isn't a word that comes to mind, kek.

pop sounds gay, gay word.
We say soda, not soda pop or pop (fruity).
Just imaging saying pop seriously, you'd sound like a homosexual.

Soft Drink.
Though I'll accept anyone calling it whatever they want, unless they call it all coke.
That's the dumbest fucking shit.

Yeah that's kind of the impression I got when I'd visit. She was from Garland, though neither of her parents lived there by the time we were dating (her mom lived in some bougie North Dallas neighborhood next to a lake and her dad was in FW) but her whole family felt straight out of King of the Hill, her dad even sounded just like Hank. (Though he looked just like Dr. Phil.)

My ex fucking hated TX and being from there and was really desperate to be a Californian, which is funny because I'm a Californian who had Midwestern and Appalachian roots and relatives and felt more at home there . Always made me sad that she forced herself to talk like a West Coaster, once in a while something would slip out in her real East TX accent and it was adorable.
