The FBI was specifically getting info from Epstein as part of his original deal when he got arrested 20+ years ago.

A common tactic among US government officials is if they know something is up but don't want to talk about it they just delegate it to many no names beneath them. The FBI likely did look into things, but he told them not to show him anything that would make him a liar.
