Yes. I'm Czech actually (don't ask how I ended up in BG), and it has over the years been partially exposed here or there how all of 1990's were a big undertaking where small parts of old guard of the socialist regimes were picked to take over the countries. People who were involved already, somewhat subtly, said that this also happened with blessing of USSR.

The problem even back then was that the socialist countries used to have an independent and sovereign internal security mechanisms and actual large armies. To change the system would've been a treason in most of them, so large amounts of diehards had to be either paid off or neutralized to avoid civil wars.

The protests, like the one you posted on Václavské Náměstí all served three purposes - keep security forces busy, give plebs feeling of influence and mainly, show people at home in US/UK the "power of democracy".

Behind the scenes, people had planned who will be put in power for many years, as far back as 1986 or earlier and die-hard socialists were disposed, cut from positions or compromat was collected. Everything to ensure that the designated people who took the power would not face any resistance from legit state apparatus.

Again, the plebs in protests were utterly irrelevant to all this and have absolutely zero part in the regime change than a convenient backdrop.

I say this because high level people (including Securitate) acted like rats and Ceausescu basically became their scapegoat they could point at. They were opportunistic and used the revolution as a tool to remain in power, become local barons, corrupt politicians or business people or whatever and sell the country to the lowest bidder.

Iliescu is a prime and public example. Although he didn't care much for money, he used the revolution to re-gain power. He went from top person in Ceausescu's regime to president of the country.

So of course, I do wish these people wouldn't have been able to use the revolution to position themselves in a better positions, but it's not like people who died in the streets could foresee what would happen. Things have changed little by little afterwards. Some still remain in power, some moved to other countries, some actually lost their power a maybe even a few were punished for other crimes they committed since then.

It looks as if the regime change was being planned carefully for the whole 80s decade. The country was victim of a covert economic embargo of key items. For example they had problems upgrading the TV from B&W to color. Another thing is that at some point romanians were told to go back to horses carriages (that after the country was mass producing Dacia 1300s). Those are signs of some kind of key pieces embargo.

One of his biggest errors was trying to implement juche ideology in Romania. Juche ideology works well for koreans, but romanias are a totally different breed of people. He was getting cornered and desperate anyway.
