I'm antiwoke and except for the last super rant the film isn't particularly woke.

For whatever reason, James Gunn (despite being a creep) knows how to develop characters, no matter how insignificant, within a few minutes of screentime whereas other directors take 3 entire movies to achieve half as much character progress if any at all despite their best efforts. Gunn was the only guy who could make Suicide Squad 2, which was a movie full of stupid nobody characters nobody had heard of, and somehow gave their story more meaning than entire franchises elsewhere.

Also, nobody seems to take notice of the fact that the cgi in James Gunn movies is always some of the best if not photo realistics.

It goes head first into the entire Superman world with all these odd characters and doesn't hold back on that, whereas Snyder and others keept it semi-realistic and simple in terms of characters.

Saw it yesterday. It seemed to me that it had an Anti-Israel theme in the plot, and any pro immigrant message I could discern was that Immigrants who assimilate into the community and don’t bring the backward culture of their parents are welcome.

There's only one question when it comes to superman. Does he represent truth, justice, and the american way in a manner that's consistent with a boy raised in 20th century kansas? Is he pretty much lawful good up holding both the law of the land while showing kidness and mercy to all? If not it fails at being superman. That's the problem with trying to modernize him too much. Supermans origins and the essence of the character are are inexorably entwined to a time and culture amd even people that are becoming more and more distant. If you change the framing too much you lose the character.

I said it in another thread but I'll say it again. If you don't respect the principles he's supposed to represent, the principles that were instilled in him by his adoptive parents in smallville kansas, if you can't remove yourself of the notion of such things being "eurocentric' or coming from a place of "privilege" at best if not being characterized as downright ignorant you will not be able to write a good superman. A superman story at it's best is a great example of a static character who stays the same and changes the world around them. He's a paragon so if as a writer you're not treating those values of small town mid 20th century middle America as fundamental truths so self evident that when represented by a perfect example of them change the world through the character illuminating those truths you will fail at making an authentic superman.
