They really are the worst. I don't even like modern 40K at all, but there is a special place in my heart of Sandy Mitchell's Caiphas Cain series and Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books.

Both series managed to completely capture the true essence of classic 40K from vastly different perspectives. Mitchell takes the Flashman formula George MacDonald Fraser perfected and places it in the setting making one of the funniest series of books I have ever read. Gaunt's Ghosts is basically Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe's Rifles series in the 40K setting. Both authors are standing on the shoulders of giants, but they pulled off what they were trying so well that it resonates and makes the setting feel real and vibrant.

I highly recommend you check them out. I wouldn't bother with anything else in the Black Library, but those two series capture everything that was good about the setting. Dark, violent, cruel, and capricious but leavened with moments of humanity, stoicism, and braggadocios courage. In particular there is this one Gaunt's Ghost book which is just a collection of short stories. One of the stories contained therein is of the company's sniper sitting alone in his perch waiting for the chance to assassinate a traitor serving the ruinous powers. He had sustained a major head injury earlier in the series and had started to go insane. While he is laying prone in his spot for days waiting for the chance to take his shot he has a complete mental breakdown and envisions an angle who talks him through his psychotic episode and bolsters his spirit. The way it was written is so subtle and, for lack of a better word, gentle that it feels so human and real you begin to suspend disbelief. He becomes actual human and not simply a character

I'm actually working my way through the black library in work on audiobook atm. Did Eisenhorn and Ravenor, then moved onto Gaunts Ghosts. But I had to stop at I think book 12 or something. The one after Blood Pact. Because the narrator was just fucking awful (funnily enough he was Irish). Every other book was Toby Longworth, who's voice and reading was excellent. I couldn't make it 10 mins into the next book and had to abandon it. Tried to buy the physical book itself but thats when I found out GW seem to operate their publishing business the same way MTG operates magic reprints and the only place I could find it was on eBay for ridiculous money. £100+. I keep meaning to get around to finding a digital version. I still can't forgive Abnett for Try Again Brag.

I remember the thing with the sniper and the angel. Wasn't originally sold on the second book being an anthology that introduces you to the characters, but it wasn't too bad. Though I think it's one of the weaker ones in the series.

I moved onto the Horus Heresy series but its kinda dragging. I'm onto Fulgrim at the moment and it's not grabbing me anywhere near as much as the Ghosts. Doesn't help that it's got a shit narrator again and he does Fulgrims voice like a faggot. The first couple were good, but they were Abnett/Longworth again. Not sure how deep into it I'll end up going.

The recent Bequin books are trash though. I hoped that, seeing as it was Abnett again, it would be decent despite being modern woke 40k era trash but it's just shit. Eisenhorn and Ravenor are just sidelined so girlboss bequin can solve everything with her mary sue powers.

I'll check out the Cain books. Hopefully there's a good narrator. The only other ones I've read were some tank-based ones. Shadowbane and I forget the second one's title. They were pretty cool

Basically space aliens come to earth, offer humanity a bunch of technology, but it is all cover for the fact the aliens want to subvert humanity and enslave them with lies. There is also a B plot that comes out in season 2 where you see that these ultra sophisticated aliens who are extremely cosmpolitan are actually blood thirsty child raping savages, the technology was stolen from previous species they infiltrated and subverted, and that their only actual talents are skinwalking as the host planet they aim to destroy and mind tricks that convince people they are weak and helpless.

Again you have to get over incredibly bad writing, and cheap as fuck production to find the gems, but if you want to there is a lot of subtext there that shows what Roddenberry was actually thinking about America right before he died.
