About
I'm a freelance science writer covering metascience, the mind, AI, and animal research. I write The Replacement, a biweekly newsletter about the evolution of animal-free science.
Previously, I was a fellow at Vox Future Perfect, a section dedicated to underreported challenges and efforts to make the world better. There, I covered emerging technology, neuroscience, and how we can do science better. Before that, I was a AAAS Mass Media fellow at WIRED and an early-career science writing fellow at The Open Notebook. I've also freelanced for a range of popular science, technical, and academic clients including The Transmitter, American Scientist, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and PLOS.
I graduated from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2023, where I studied how the hippocampus and the orbitofrontal cortex work together to help animals make decisions. My experience running invasive experiments on rhesus macaques continues to inform my nuanced coverage of animal research.
I look forward to hearing from you! More information: drceliaford.com
