The natural part has nothing to do with it. Organic chemistry is just hard. Plenty of organic compounds have been synthesized, however. It's even been done with cocaine (though doing so is not economical).
Vanillin is a perfect example where it can be synthesized from petrochemicals and the a 1:1 match of the natural compound in vanilla beans.
