Christianity: On the Nature of Cringe
Everybody is sick of being told by boomers to pull up by bootstraps, etc. We also hear the same tired sayings, like buzzword mk ultra activation phrases, and our reaction is to cringe.

Nothing addresses our real problems. The answers we get to the destruction of the family and the despair in the dating market are just out of touch cringe platitudes from 40+ years ago.

I find that the world often has these trite, cliche platitudes, like "focus on yourself" or "be the person you would be happy with" etc. These particular platitudes aren't wrong per se but they're definitely cringe. Why are they cringe? Because they have shadows of the truth, but miss the mark. The Orthodox Church teaches us that we are fighting a war, day in and day out; that we are called to become holy. That only in the strength of the Omnipotent Master and Lover of mankind, can we ever hope to be healed of our sick fallen human nature. This is the true meaning of focusing on yourself. It's not some self-help platitude about acquiring more material things, more status. It's about your inner spiritual life, and the peace that is visible to other people when you allow Christ God to dwell within you.

Platitudes have no depth. Cringe is the recoiling from hypocrisy, from pride. When we cringe at people throwing platitudes at us, we cringe at their pride, because we are hungry for depth, for true wisdom.

Our Holy Father Euphrosynos (EuphrΓ³synos) the Cook was born into a peasant family, and had no schooling, but he was truly devout and faithful.

As an adult, he became a cook, and was able to save money out of his expenses by depriving himself, but only for the sake of almsgiving. His position as a cook permitted him to eat the best food first, but he never took advantage of this privilege. He ate his greens and olives gratefully, while the most appetizing meats and most tantalizing fish were cooking before him.

Later Euphrosynos went to a monastery, where his obedience was to work in the kitchen as a cook. In contrast to the meals that he used to prepare in secular hotels, he made very plain food in the monastery. To those who complained and mocked him, Euphrosynos meekly replied: "Good cooking is not useful for attaining the Kingdom of Heaven. The more the body craves pleasure, the more the soul will lose that which it truly needs. It is not my intention to punish you."

Some of the monks scorned him because of his coarse rustic background, but he endured their contempt in silence and was not disturbed by it. Saint Euphrosynos strove to please the Lord by his virtuous life, which he concealed from others, but the Lord Himself revealed to the monastic brethren just what spiritual heights their cook had attained.

In the same monastery there was a devout priest who prayed that he might know what good things are prepared for those who love God. One night, as he was sleeping, he found himself in a beautiful garden, where, to his astonishment, he beheld the most wondrous things. Then he saw Father Euphrosynos, the monastery cook standing in the garden and partaking of the good things of that place. As he approached the cook, he asked to whom the garden belonged, and how he came to be there.

Saint Euphrosynos replied, "This garden is reserved for God's elect, and by His great goodness, I also dwell here."

Then the priest asked him what he did in the garden. The Saint told him, "I have authority over all the things you see here. I rejoice and am filled with gladness and the spiritual enjoyment of them."

The priest questioned him again, "Can you give me something of these good things?"

"Certainly," he replied, "by God's grace, take whatever you wish."

Pointing to some apples, he inquired if he might have some of them. Taking a few of the apples, Saint Euphrosynos placed them in the priest's outer garment saying, "Receive that which you requested, and may you delight in them."

At that moment the semantron was heard, summoning the Fathers to the Midnight Service. When the priest awakened, he thought that his vision was just a dream. But when he reached for his outer garment, he found the apples which the cook had given him, and he could still smell their wonderful fragrance.

He got out of bed and then hurried to church. There he saw Euphrosynos and asked him where he had been that night. The Saint said, "Forgive me, Father, I have not been anywhere tonight. I have just come to church or the Service."

The priest urged him to tell the truth, so that God's glory might be made manifest. The humble Euphrosynos told him, "I was in the place where the good things are, which those who love God shall inherit, and which for many years you wished to behold. There you saw me enjoying the blessings of that garden; for God had deigned to reveal to you the blessings of the Just. He has performed this miracle through me, the lowly one."

"Father Euphrosynos, what did you give me from that garden?"

He replied, "The delightful and most fragrant apples which you just put on your bed. Forgive me, Father, for I am a worm and not a man."

When the service of Matins was over, the priest told the brethren about his vision and showed them the apples. They noticed the ineffable fragrance with spiritual joy, marveling at what the priest had told them. Rushing into the kitchen, they found that Saint Euphrosynos had already left the monastery, fleeing from the glory of men, and he could not be found.

The brethren shared the apples among themselves and, as a blessing, gave pieces to those who visited the monastery, especially for those in need of healing, for those who ate the apples were cured of their ailments. Many received benefit from the gift of Saint Euphrosynos. An account of this vision was written, not only on paper, but also in their hearts.

Finally, Saint Euphrosynos reposed in a remote HΔ“sykhastαΈ—rion. The Church, knowing that a king or a philosopher is not more worthy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven than a cook, has numbered Euphrosynos the Cook among her Saints, for he knew God's will and lived according to it..

A fragment of the Saint's relics is located in the Monastery of Loukous in the Holy Metropolis of Mantineia and Kynouria in Greece.

That's just blindness to your own state of being, as if you aren't sinful. That's the fundamental aspect of where our sense of humility and empathy comes from: we don't condemn other people due to their actions, because we know we ourselves are equally (if not moreso) sinful. It's just not lying to yourself and having real honest introspection, which then begets a desire to change.

God loves us. He did not curse us, we cursed ourselves out of our pride and disobedience. Wanting to live apart from the grace and power and all things upheld by God is like desiring to live without oxygen. You aren't going to get very far before you keel over and suffer all kinds of maladies. That is where we are now.

I can't speak for anyone else, but our churches in the city do outreach (meals, clothing, basic sanitary supplies, etc) and help anyone, we don't card for blackness to determine how much you deserve assistance.

The ironic thing is you'd get more food and help from the parish if you actually became an Orthodox Christian, went to the meal after Liturgy every Sunday, and networked with the good people there who are more than willing to help you in times of trouble. We bought a car for the white guy who got out of prison recently, he was part of our prison outreach program and he was Baptized while still in the clink. He now has a job, an apartment, the car like I said, maybe even a girlfriend. God is good

The exact opposite. The Pharisees were obsessed with legalism, with following their interpretation of the Law to the letter, at the expense of your actual spiritual disposition and at the expense of virtue and righteousness.

Along this line, Western legalistic understanding of Christianity including Roman Catholicism and peaking with Protestantism is just so far removed from actually affecting repentance in your spiritual life.

>we are hungry for depth, for true wisdom.
True wisdom is only found in the Word.
Solomon's works are especially useful if that is what you seek.
Ecclesiastes is his commentary about life on earth, following a lifetime of indulging himself in all that it has to offer.

Here's how he ends it,
>[Ecc 12:13-14]
>Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

I appreciate you. Not just in this thread but your posts throughout and on occasion that I see. I will say to you that it has always been the Christian understanding that, since the Church is the Body of Christ, that if you want the full Jesus Christ, you must also find Him in the Church as well, in all its members. Christians are people who are "in Christ" and to be in Christ is to be Baptized into His Body, of which there is only One Body (St Paul's Epistle to the Church in Ephesus, Ch 4:4-6) which is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, the Orthodox Church.

SUS. He could have made himself a woman to fuck by now. I don't trust that shit for a second. You worship a god that unhuman, you start trying to make yourself unhuman to be more like your god. Circumcision... you see where the mind goes with that line of thought? You start thinking things are so holy, that disgusting things start looking holy to you, like abraham cutting a piece of his son's dick off, or Yahweh cuckolding Joseph, in the very literal sense, and then Joseph having to go around talking about "muh wife's kid is wicked Holy" and Jesus going around saying not to punish cheaters because he's a bastard himself. Yes. I choose Norse mythology where I will keep my genitals wherever I go. All the gods and angels on both sides of the divine war take a break and stop fighting in order to make sure none of the Norse ever have to reincarnate as the opposite sex, no matter which tribe they are part of, which afterlife they go to, and which gods they worship.
I am sincerely warning you that in this lifetime, most people on 4chan consider this world bad because jewish people control many things in the world, and many of us were circumcised against our will. The afterlife Christians pray for is that a jewish guy named Jesus is literally king of everything, and you are a slave, and you are born again without a dick. It's like all the bad parts about this world, but way more intense. Think about what you are praying for before you pray for it.

If only you knew the spiritual rejoicing that is to come that doesn't involve low, base interactions like drunkenness and sex, but is instead glorified. You will know one day, but my prayer for you is that you don't learn too late.

Unironically I think you should read and get into media like Warhammer 40k lore. You need to elevate in your mind what you consider to be the heights of glory. And then realize even that is a fallen human concept of what awaits humanity transcendent in the glory to come.
Man was made in the image of God with dominion over the earth, not susceptible to the elements but in control of them, receiving infinite joy from the beauty of creation indescribable, and beholding face to face communion with the Perfect Creator and Master of all things as intimately as a friend, a brother, a father. And ultimately to join with Him and receive even greater glory by partaking in His divinity through His grace. Love is a continuous exchange of gifts, giving to someone and wanting the best for them, and vice versa. This is what God desires for man. To be in Christ is to be with Christ in glory.
May God grant you wisdom and reveal His immeasurable loving-kindness to you.

Your relationship to everyone will be closer than a wife and children according to the flesh here. People that do have that here will retain the love they built and it will be even more amplified in the eternity of deepening love to come.
I know our culture is so debauched that you probably don't have old people in your life who love each other and have been happily married for like 60+ years, and just love being in each other's presence. You think their life no longer has meaning because they don't have sex? It's such a low view of love.

In Christ, everyone is your brother and sister. The Lord God is all things for you, and chiefly your Father. Your mother is the most Holy Mother of all Christians and the Mother of God, sweeter and more compassionate and happier for you than anyone you can relate to now.
It's so beyond our experience now.

if you aren't a newfag, you know the wizard meme on this board?

The irony is that the monastics are the holiest on earth because they focus on glorifying God, growing closer to Him, and in turn it allows them to love people selflessly.

You really need to get over yourself though. You are not so hopeless that God cannot help you. God is more powerful and caring than that. If you seek to do His will and follow Him, then He will do what is best for you. If that means marriage as a path to holiness (which is what the Orthodox Church knows the primary purpose of marriage as it is instituted by God is for: to help us become holy together by struggling and enduring and learning together) if that is His will for you it will happen. But you have to work on yourself and struggle against your passions and flaws for it. On the flip side if His will is for you to join a brotherhood and become a literal wizard with prayers that can move mountains, then Glory to God for that too. You just have to accept that you are not in control and that He knows better than you what you need.

Heaven is not a given. It is a reward for those to struggle. In Christ's words, we must DENY ourselves, take up our Cross (suffer and endure in this world), and follow Him (keep His commandments and do His will and achieve holiness and love for all people). Otherwise you will not want to go to heaven, because you won't value the love of God. Instead you will love yourself, and your passions, and your pleasures, and you will condemn yourself away from His love because you will feel so guilty His love meeting your rejecting in life will scald you like fire. That's the Christian understanding of hell: true outer darkness and loneliness and unresolved passions with no release.
