zonists were just a small group of atheist jews who decided to go make a jewish state. It was a good historical moment since lots of new national ethnostates were forming, it was in vogue at the time for a region of people who shared an ethnic similarity to break away from an empire and become a nation. There were already jews buying up land in the region back in the 19th century and israel started out as the ambition to, after the ottomans collapsed, have those jewish regions of the area become israel which is perfectly in line with the contemporary thinking of the time around the world (which is why the UN supported it).

Palestine is a name for the region. Just because there are people now, who in more modern times thanks to arrifat, self identity as palestinians does not mean they have some special connection to it, many were actually foreign laborers brought in under the british mandate.
