Simple Mendelian genetics you were taught at school fails for humans and other animals. Consider human height. If there was a tall gene and short gene, and one was dominant while the other recessive, then people would be two sizes, either tall or short.
And of course they are not. They come in a huge variety of heights.
We now know that height is controlled by thousands of variants (aka “genes” or factors that affect genes). Some make you taller, others make you shorter. If you have more tall ones than short ones you get taller.
A large number of studies have been made that identify which genes are associated with height, diseases, intelligence, agression etc It turns out that these are all complex traits, defined by thousands of genes, spread over all of your chromosomes.
Think about it like this: All dogs are descended from wolves (look it up if you are an unbeliever), and humans have been eugenically selecting complex traits for wolves for the last 40 000 years.
You can now get a wolf as small as toy pom or as large as Great Dane, as intelligent as a Border Collie or as dumb as an English Bulldog. This is the power of complex traits, they are potent. Even natural aggression has been selectively bred out of wolves.
Exactly the same evolutionary development has happened to humans.
Only two famous geneticists tried to warn the general public about the importance of complex traits and racial differences. The mainstream media have made pariahs of both of them. Not because they were biologically wrong, but considered morally wrong.
