Ukraine’s Defense & Military Developments (1/2)
> President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a late-night address, said the Armed Forces are finalising targeting for a new series of long-range strikes deep inside Russia intended to disrupt command hubs and force Moscow to redeploy air defences, thereby reducing pressure on Ukrainian cities.
> Counter-terror units of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) tracked and eliminate two foreign mercenaries who had assassinated Colonel Oleksii Voronych in Kyiv on 6 July, eliminating the cell and signalling that political murders will draw immediate, lethal retribution.
> Ukrainian naval engineers presented the one-metre unmanned surface boat “Ursula,” stressing that its low profile and 200 km range will allow explosive deliveries against Black Sea Fleet targets at a fraction of cruise-missile cost.
> The General Staff released geolocated video of a Russian Pantsir-S1 air-defence system worth roughly US$45 million destroyed near Tokmak, demonstrating Ukraine’s growing ability to blind enemy air cover ahead of counter-strikes.
> Front-line units began firing newly supplied anti-drone cartridges from standard AK-type rifles; Forbes reports tests showed reliable kills out to 300 m, giving infantry a cheap answer to quad-copters that spot artillery.
> At an investment forum in Rome, the Ministry of Strategic Industries signed multi-year contracts with five U.S. and EU firms covering 155 mm shell production, loitering-munitions assembly and secure drone-control software, accelerating Kyiv’s push for domestic mass-manufacture.

> Former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces — now Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom — Valerii Zaluzhnyi told the weekly NV that the war has entered a “technological phase” in which success hinges on AI-guided targeting, synchronised strike chains and rapid battlefield data fusion, arguing that Kyiv must prioritise indigenous high-tech weapons over massed manpower to secure victory.> Operational Command “Khortytsia” reported intensified Russian raids on Dnipro Delta islands meant to disperse Ukrainian reserves yet assessed the overall threat to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast as moderate, noting robust artillery coverage.> Military Intelligence (HUR) estimated Russia now holds fewer than 120 modern Iskander and Kinzhal ballistic missiles because sanctions cut micro-electronics imports, limiting Moscow’s capacity for mass salvos.> Zelensky stated in Parliament that 40 percent of weapons employed this summer are Ukrainian-built—up from 15 percent a year ago—citing this as proof that “we will not run out of shells before the enemy does.”
The armored parade has started.

Russia’s stockpile of ballistic missiles is shrinking—Ukraine’s military intel says only around 300 Iskander-M and KN-23 missiles remain. Meanwhile, over 60 tactical missile launchers have been deployed near the border.

A German photographer turned to be a NYT “reporter” who lives in Russia, the homeland of her mother, had already been in a controversy earlier this year. In April the International Jury & World Press Photo had apologised for combining two works into one visual pair: Underground Field Hospital by Nanna Heitmann and Beyond the Trenches by Florian Bachmeier. German photographer Florian Bachmeier captured 6 y.o. Anhelina from Kharkiv Oblast, who suffered from panic attacks after surviving a Russian bombardment. In contrast, German photographer Nanna Heitmann - aka now “a reporter” for NYT escorted by “Akhmat” in Kursk oblast - presented a photograph titled Underground Field Hospital, which depicted a wounded militant from the so called "Donetsk People's Republic" terror organisation set up by Moscow and fought alongside Russian forces.
Aficionada of Russian landscapes and people “shaped by their environment” Ms Heitmann is the author of the series Hiding from Baba Yaga, a project inspired by the witch of Slavic folklore and following the Yenisei river from the Republic of Tuva northward through Siberia.
Once interviewed she confessed, “… sometimes I'm motivated by something other than raising awareness or creating a historical document. Sometimes I just want to take the viewer into another world.”
Perhaps it’s better to stay “historical” rather than to take viewers into manipulated “Russian war-lds”.

Hey everyone,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Just curious: what exactly is the endgame for Ukraine here? I've supported them the entire time, but I just don't see any path to victory anymore.
You might not want to hear this, but I honestly think the best course of action would be for Ukraine to cede all claims to Crimea and Donbass. Let's face it: the people there consider themselves Russians anyway. Even if Ukraine miraculously managed to retake all of its former territory, the people in those eastern and southern regions would be disgruntled and you'd see a Troubles-esque situation.
I think it's safe to say everyone on both sides would be happier with a split. The Russians could rejoin their motherland, and Ukraine would be more Ukrainian overall.

Russian propagandist Solovyev:
"Right before our eyes, Trump is undergoing 'Bidenization.' Trump, who used to be the only one able to talk to Putin, is turning into just another version of Biden.
Does he seriously think he can now talk down to us and expect us to obey? Has he learned nothing?"

France's Foreign Intelligence Chief: Russia is an existential threat to Europe.
Nicolas Lerner, head of France's Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE), gave an interview to the French television channel LCI.
Key points:
▪ Lerner, like Mark Rutte and President Macron, considers Russia an existential threat to Europe in the medium and long term, as the ideology promoted by the Kremlin could lead to another war.
▪ Russia is actively interfering in elections in several European countries.
▪ Before the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, around 80 Russian agents were operating on French territory. About 50 of them were expelled from France.
▪ In 2022, French counterintelligence uncovered a senior official at a company who had been recruited by the Russians more than a decade before the full-scale war. As a result of that investigation, another six Russian agents were expelled from the country.
▪ Lerner said he was struck by the brazenness of the Russians when, several years ago, Putin unveiled a monument to agents outside the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) headquarters, listing the cities where they operate: Beijing, New York, Paris, London.
▪ The French foreign intelligence service continues to maintain contact with its Russian vis-a-vis in the context of cooperation on Islamist terrorism.
▪ As part of these contacts, the head of the DGSE has had several opportunities to speak with Sergey Naryshkin, including one recent conversation, as he noted.

Senator Lindsey Graham:
I expect in the coming days you will see weapons flowing at a record level to help Ukraine defend themselves...
I expect in the coming days more support from Europe regarding their efforts to help Ukraine. Putin made a miscalculation here. For six months President Trump tried to entice Putin to the table.
The attacks have gone up not down. One of the biggest miscalculations Putin has made is to play Trump. And you just watch in the coming days and weeks there's going to be a massive effort to get Putin to the table.
And to those who are helping him, China, buying cheap Russian oil and having no accountability, those days are about over.

President Trump has announced an important statement regarding Russia on Monday, July 14, but didn't provide any further details.
Putin commented on that through Peskov: the Kremlin is waiting for the important announcement by President Trump to understand what he meant exactly.
There are some expectations that President Trump (who has expressed his disappointment in Putin several times now) will announce a large US weapons supply to Ukraine.
For Ukraine, which suffers from Russian attacks daily, that would be a very desirable outcome.

President Trump said Ukraine is getting "Patriots" and "the European Union is paying for it".
"Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening," President Trump added.

It always made me laugh, how the condition of roads declined rapidly after you crossed the border. Like, fucking IMMEDIATELY. The border zone was well kept, but once you got out of sight of the last booth containing Vatniks, the banks of the road were instantly full of tires, cardboard boxes, fridges and other shit, and a few kilometers onward the road was full of potholes. We went through Viipuri, and the bridge there had potholes that you could literally see through.
