How comfortable and expensive is travelling by car in your country?
Here in Russia cops don't fine you for minor speeding personally, only for overtaking. Speeding is fined by cams: cams have to be visible, but there are shitload of cams, and few of them are on at any given time, so you have to use radar-detector all the time. And there are some areas with waves always present, so you still have to guess which cams are on.
Soft speed limit for free roads is 110km/h, for most toll roads is 130, and for the super-toll roads (which is essentially only one between Moscow and StPb so far) is 150. For speeding less than 20km over that soft limit you pay a minor fine ($5), for 20-40 - average fine ($30), and 40+ is the hard limit which makes you lose your license for a year. Speeding is only recorded directly at the cam, so there are no calculated speed fines.
Toll roads cost ~$40 for 1k km.
Gas which most people use is ~$0.6 for 1l at major chains gas stations (+ cashback), 20% less at noname stations but those are mostly used by locals.
Major chains gas stations are quite comfortable and have nice food at the average city mall foodcourt level, but the food costs x2-x3 from the city (a regular burger is $4). Then there are roadside diners which are slightly less fancy with slightly cheaper food, but still more expensive than in the city.
So overall average 1k km trip (using a toll road and trying not to get fined) takes 10 hrs, costs $40 toll + $60 gas + $15 minor fines + $10 food/energy drinks = $125. A comfortable train would be $80 for comparison, and shitty uncomfortable one can cost as low as $20.
