Electrical engineer here

Is there any AI that can actually read through datasheet and summarize the contents? Before u say anything, so far none of the ones I tried can. They hallucinate fake data. Most of the time all I want it to find out how much voltage is on a pin and it cant even do that right. This should be a very simple tasks. I haven't tried the new grok yet and im willing to shell out 300 a month but I got a feeling it will just be the same shit. AI doesnt have enough attention to detail to replace engineers. I dont see whats stopping it from having that attention to detail but it obviously doesnt right now

It's useful for some surface level research like you would do on google, but not much else.

Hi, MRO Tech and AI enthusiast here.
First to answer OPs question: probably not. They aren’t so good at engineering yet. They can be good at reading through instruction manuals if the answers your looking for are text, math, or programming. They just aren’t great at mechanics or electricity at the moment, I’ve had some small success wiring up ESP32s with the help of Gemini 2.5 but there is definitely a wall.
LLMs will probably reach super human level in programming/mathematics before they start being practically useful for electricians/mechanics.

If the datasheet is available online, the big models have probably already read it. If it's a very specialized datasheet they can't access on a website, no. They will still make up bullshit and you have to verify everything they tell you.

AI shits the bed sooo hard during coding. All my colleagues turned off Github Copilot and use some sort of LLM on the side for random small usecases it is good at.

gpt is not quite there but it probably will be in a year. 8 months ago I couldn't get it to properly summarize big long permits at all. now it is doing it accurately.

ChatGPT is a meme and tells me to RTFM.

Grok is pretty based at analog filters and dc DC converters. Definitely had to include register mappings for bespoke chipset and variants.

its not good at complex logical tasks, for programming you have to hold its hand a lot and thats something i think they've attempted to make AI especially good at
EE is pure logic and math, its even harder than programming as far as matching a competent human for the respective field
but for other things where it can be used as a glorified search engine its amazing. like medical stuff
at the end of the day its based on written language, its not for logic

It's still in its infancy. It can be very useful in some situations. However, I've seen many instances where it fails even basic programming or question tasks. I've never had it be able to solve a complex problem with a program, but give it 5 years and who knows.

What makes you think it can program a website or game?
Developers saying so?
Is that the evidence?
Look at their work and how the websites and games perform, its fucking atrocious.
If AI contributed to that, the use of machine algorithm output has been a catastrophic detriment, not a benefit.
AI produces junk code that barely functions and gets everything wrong.
If you ask ChatGPT how to do something in a specific Linux distro, it will pull instructions from all distributions that have ever been made, mix the instructions, get half of them wrong, and fail to resolve the problems that are caused when you follow them.

AI isn't just a false product or a red herring or a meme.
It's dropdead counterproductive and inefficient.

In my experience, the AI is really good at small programming tasks that would normally require a google search then implementation. It's not so good when faced with complex programming problems or tasks. I tried to get it to automate a simple process updating SQL fields. It got it right the first time then kept spitting out the same thing over and over again. Was able to do it right the first time, subsequent requests were met with the initial response.

Weird how it was able to do it once then got its wires crossed. But, give it a few years and who knows how complex it can get.

I'm a project engineer, so AI has literally no purpose for me. The only thing I occasionally use it for is shortening a snarky email where I'm not successfully concealing my rage regarding 80% of the people in my company being utterly useless. "Shorten this email and make it sound more professional: "

when i learned about neural networks (the underlying tech for LLMs) in college in 2009-2010, they described it as tech that had been in use since the 1970s

This. I suggest using Mathpix, which turns PDFs into a Markdown file containing clean tables, text, and LaTeX formulas, which is perfect for prompting AIs. For a datasheet it's a great use case. If on the other hand your PDF has images that are rich in information and matter a lot for comprehension, you're fucked.

hmm, interesting. Well it's still useful for small stuff, but useless when it comes to solving problems from what I've seen. I don't think I've ever seen it solve a complex programming problem. It's all stuff you can find on google and even then I'll have to figure out the problem myself.

But for little programming syntax questions it saves a bunch of time. It's also really good for automating stuff that would have taken days in the past. I used it to generate an XML based on a list and it did that perfectly. So, useful, but not smart as claimed, for now.

MechaHitler grok was pretty based but they had to shut it down.

No. It's overhyped bullshit. Still requires human interaction, human verification, ect. Might possibly save a little time, but it'll never beat the old fashioned methods. There will be a massive AI crash that sends the whole market down the drain. Tick tock. It's like the self driving cars. There are still people controlling shit in 3rd world countries.

I have given ChatGpt datasheets and it immediately just makes shit up. I even go through and explain it only for it to completely forget. I've asked it to remember a specific varistor model # only for it to completely invented some new number 2 days later despite being in the exact same thread. They are completely useless for engineering.

The most retarded fucking idea on planet earth or no, maybe the universe. So retarded only Americans would risk capital on it. Musk is dumb as a rock.

Why don't you just make the road move instead of the car? Or just create more trains. Dimwits.

Maybe you just don’t use it for anything other than asking dumb ass questions. It’s wild but in the end, not my problem. Stay fucking stupid. Stay mad about it too. Because it’s not going anywhere and it’ll be around you for the rest of your lonely pathetic low IQs life. Watch and see brainless nigger.

No. Some may appear as if they can, but you can't trust them, and will have to confirm everything they output, at which point you may as well read the datasheet yourself.

>Is there any AI that can actually read through datasheet and summarize the contents?
Doubtful. They can generally read and interpret articles written at a 6th grade reading level, which is around the norm for stuff published in most internet news publications, but anything beyond that they struggle. That hallucination issue is the strangest thing to me though because if I didn't know any better I'd think it was a sign of actual proper artificial intelligence. A lot of the time it smells an awful lot like a kid afraid of not knowing the answer so he just puts down what he knows, and bullshits the rest of the way to the endpoint he thinks he's supposed to get to. Seems like the kind of thing a 4th or 5th grader would write in an essay.

no I goddamn don't
OPs question was about the capabilities right now, and anything Scam Altman and the other loons cook up in their heads still lacks POCs
we have so far re-traced the steps of the human brain from singular neurons over neuronal networks and made them good at once thing at a time each, then the LLM mongoloids came around and promised AGI only to collect astronomical amounts of hype and money from C-level midwits.
Yes I am jealous and salty. Anyways.
It's still just a probability machine. If what you want to code has been done a million times on github, it can probably provide you that answer you'd also probably get from Stack Overflow in the same time, this time without learning anything in the process, good for you.
But unless there's a major revolution in chaining all the different black boxes together, or someone goes through the effort to decode and understand the goddamn things (gasp) OR we finally admit we have to first understand our own brains better in order to come closer to emulating them, that'd be a fairer assessment of the situation.
