I think what people forget is that there seemed to be much deeper sub cultures in the 90s than today. I don’t even remember the last time I saw a “goth” person, but back in the 90s and early 2000s it was like this whole parallel culture. I went to a comfy upper middle class school like Columbine, and I do recall there was a very distinct divide between the “goths”/outcasts and the popular kids. I didn't follow this event closely but I'm only a few years younger than the shooters. It was a completely different reality then, right now if someone wrongs you, you can do all kinds of stuff online to expose them and get people on your side. If someone wrongs me now I go after them using the Internet but that wasn't possible back then, there was no easy way to get a bunch of people on your side, everything was authority based so if some kid said someone did really bad bullying, the authorities, such as the principal, etc had the final say, there was no real recourse beyond that. If the principal said the bullying didn't happen or wasn't that bad, most people would take their word as gospel and that was the end of it.

What they did was horrible and shouldn't have happened but it's possible that they were carrying out some kind of retribution that was justified but they went way overboard. That era seemed pretty violent where I was, not with guns but fights were really common where I lived, at one school I went to, fights would even happen in the classroom when the teacher turned their back, like a kid would punch a kid in the face and the teacher didn't even see it. No one had phones with video cameras, there was never evidence of anything.

I remember in like 2004 I was out for a jog and some kids threw rocks at me from a car and could've seriously hurt me but I didn't even have a phone on me. If that happened now I would most likely get a picture of their car and I would surely hunt them down but then i just had to let it go as I couldn't be sure of anything after the fact as it happened at night and my memory was hazy from the trauma of it.

From what I have heard these subcultures are fully dead, there are no (imagined) delineations anymore, only the actual delineations of your social network (i.e. who you actually are friends with). I graduated in 2013 and I think we were on the tail end of it; we didn’t really have cliques, everyone *could* be friends with everyone without it being weird or a faux pas, but we did still have drama / art kids, band kids, athletes, Christians, stoners, preps, etc. With the exception of the drama kids all of these kids mostly hung out in one big group. The drama kids started a gay-straight alliance in senior year. These were most of my friends, and I do remember them having a very “us vs. them” mentality that in retrospect was only really validated by a few rude kids; 95% of the kids I can remember who went to my school were nice, even if I didn’t get along with them.

I think it’s hard to see it if it’s not happening to you and also hard to imagine how it makes people feel if you didn’t experience it. I thought of myself as being a kid that got bullied from the ages of about 9 to 21. Most of my friends felt like this, too. When I reflected on it more I realized that 90% of what I considered bullying was just comparatively pedestrian social dynamics playing out in a way I didn’t like. Some people grow up and internalize that, others never get over it, but when you’re a teenager and you don’t have the context you gain in adulthood it can easily make a person suicidal, homicidal, or both.
