So even if the japs were barbaric and they killed lots of people and fought like savages, how does that justify nuking kindergarten children and killing hundreds of thousands of women and children and whatnot? Dont you kinda lose the moral highground at that point? Especially since japan had no more airforce and no more navy, they were surrounded and embargoed to hell and there was no reason nor real plan to invade and waste lives, they would have just starved and sued for peace eventually.

Why drop nukes on civilians? Why not, at the very least, just nuke some remote military base or something? At least they bombed pearl harbor which was a military objective, imagine how it would have felt if they killed a couple hundred thousand innocent american women and kids.

There's a lot of bullshit mythology that has developed around the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. I'm not speaking for nuclear weapons today, which are frighteningly powerful. But those weapons in the 1940s weren't any more destructive than what most nations already had in their arsenal. For example, the Dresden carpet bombing killed nearly as many civilians in one night. But hardly anyone talks about it. The city was lit on fire so severely that the oxygen was sucked right out of the streets and people suffocated to death, if they didn't burn. But it didn't create a mushroom cloud, and it wasn't novel. So no one cares. Point is, the two bombs that dropped on Japan weren't as special as future media would make them out to be (for a noble purpose, albeit, to scare of from using the far more powerful bombs that were developed in later years). What I'm trying to say is that war is hell, and civilians get targeted when the war gets brutal and desparate. This happened to every country that got entangled in WW2.

Was psychological impact part of the process? Absolutely, but we hit dense urban centers to show just how much a single one of our bombs could do, not to absolutely buttfuck civilians just for the pleasure.

Justification is subjective; anything can be justified. However there is no need to justify anything. The objective of war is to force your enemy to submit by any means necessary. Justifying this or justifying that is bullshit, combatants will do whatever is necessary to win. If Japan had the atomic weapon and could’ve deployed it against Los Angeles or New York City in order to force America to abandon the war, they would have done so. The Japanese spared no acts of barbarism on the populations that fell under their control.

Why drop it on civilians?
Because killing civilians in such a horrific manner with such a powerful weapon forced the Japanese government to surrender. They went from wanting a total war involving every man woman and child on the Japanese mainland to unconditional surrender in less than a month.
Alternatively, the United States could’ve used submarines to completely blockade Japan and cause a mass famine that would’ve caused immense suffering and killed a lot more people. Combined with near daily firebombing raids, I think the Japanese would’ve preferred the atomic weapon and a quick capitulation.

War is hell. Anyone trying to make justifications or claim some moral high ground is a retarded. In deadly combat, men will do whatever they need to do in order to kill their enemy and stay alive. The rest is just bullshit.

The point was never about the Japanese, but the Russians/Soviets. They were finished in Europe, starting to pay attention to Japan on their eastern coast. We needed to put on a show for them, so they could know that we could fuck them up if we wanted to. The Japanese just happened to be a convenient opportunity for a demonstration... people we didn't care about.
