My theory is that heaven and hell are "snapshot" states of consciousness that become static personal experiences right at the moment of biological death. Perception of time is stretched infinitely or even looped, creating either "eternal suffering" or "eternal salvation". In other words you get to bath in your own juices for all eternity, if you carry regret and identity issues that would translate into hell.

Jesus always pointed inward, said "the kingdom" and forgiveness is there. Externalizing all these concepts and seeing them as external forces or places has made people lose control over them, seeking forgiveness outside of themselves. I think that's the most dangerous trap.
