The electricians aren't even good half the time - tell me there's no issue, then the tenant moves out and I find busted off plug prongs in a floor outlet

Giving me flashbacks to my days as an insulator. Modern "custom" homes are the biggest pieces of shit I've ever seen. There are maybe 2 builders in my town I'd trust to frame properly. Every other company hired the speediest but shittiest framers they could just to get as many homes up as they could. We'd almost always have to wait a week or more longer than what we were scheduled for because the framers, plumbers, roofers or sparkies fucked something major up. One company in particular would hire the shittiest roofers I've ever seen. Never used nails, always staples. And they'd always miss the rafters. Resulting in these shit houses losing half their roof in a mild to medium wind storm.

I know a tradie who got lucky and found a short term 1 month contract for some emergency work paying £100 per hour.

A tradie will then take this figure and pretend that lucrative contract work like this is always available and will just say that he earns £200k a year (£100x8x5x52).

Journeymen plumbers in Chicago make $60.50 an hour plus full benefits.

You have to understand that 70k is what you see on tax returns. Smart tradies get paid in cash or do 1099 contracting, which means everything is tax deductible. So ... you pull in 70k on tax returns, about 30k in cash jobs, and you pay little to no income tax because you deduct a ton of expenses. Take home pay in that scenario would be about 30% more than some retarded software engineer making 100k. Also, you have stuff like inventory. So, you make $500 on a job, spend $400 on plumbing fixtures, you made only $100, but you hid about $400 in profit in inventory which means you now have $400 in assets but only made $100 for.tax purposes. Really good tradies can pull in the equivalent of about 200-300k in real profits if you actually add it up.

What tradesmen also wont tell you is the labor isn't what kills their bodies. Tradies are typically alcoholics, most smoke/vape or use some form of tobacco products, and most blow their paychecks in strip clubs. Clean living isn't encouraged among the blue collar crowd. Avoid these kind of vices as a tradie and you are set.
