I lived with a girlfriend for 8 years amd hated it. I would get excited when I had the place to myself. Now I'm seeing a girl who wants to start dating but I'm reluctant to commit because I don't want to give up my privacy and alone time.

Being alone is great. You don't have to be in social mode and come up with things to talk about or do. Can be a lazy as you want. Do whatever you want when you want.
