novel - It (just maybe skip the last few pages and make up your own ending)
novella - The Long Walk (excellent)
King writes (wrote, rather) best when he didn't have to provide an ending. That is, his writing was entertaining but when he had to tie things together and bring it to a close he just usually fumbled, badly. Surprisingly, King's short stories are probably his best offering. I'd stay away from anything after he was hit by the van (1999), something got broken there.
