>>510553500 (OP)Global warming (which is real, and is happening) is a crisis of the capitalist economy. Infinite growth, capitalism’s raison d’être, is contrary to the very physical laws upon which our universe operates. Resources are finite, land is finite, the time in a day is finite. Physical laws tend to be conservative. The conservation of energy, of mass, of momentum. That means nothing is ever added or lost, simply transformed. Our biology works on these principles. We consume other organisms in order to fuel our bodies. Did you know that the words “economy” and “ecosystem” actually come from the same root? The Greek word ‘oikos’ for “house”. Economics literally means “housekeeping” or “household management”, whereas an ecosystem then must be a “household system”. The term ‘system’ refers to a set of interconnected objects working in tandem as part of a larger mechanism. If we take the words we have as their literal meaning, we might say that people who are called “economists” are actually ecologists, because rather than inventing more efficient systems to manage our planetary resources, they instead observe the system as it is and describe where and how each individual fits into the mechanism. But an unhealthy ecosystem will tend to self destruct. We’re seeing that today. We refuse to accept realities, such as the tendency of profits to fall. In pursuit of infinite growth, infinite wealth, we create contrived systems of artificial scarcity, of obsolescence, of perpetual dependency. It used to be easy enough to repair your own TV. Work on your own car. Maintain and fix all your belongings. Not anymore. They’re programmed to die on you one way or another, so that the TV company can keep selling TVs at the same rate. Capitalism misallocates resources, creates environmental pollution, and doesn’t reward those who are truly capable.
