she probably did hear the phone but expects everyone to believe she didn`t. to some people a lie they expect should be believed is the same as the truth. that would explain and justify her husbands response, which is otherwise nonsensical. another explanation for her husbands response would be that he just has anger issues and explodes over everything, which she says he hasn`t done before, which could be another lie.

he may be having just a really bad day and a nervous breakdown where you either end up having a panic attack or a rage attack. that happens.
