It's escapism the same way books, movies, shows, video games, poker, the internet, etc. are. Sports are just so deeply rooted in human evolution that it's why they're still the most prevalent because they are the most basic as far as the activity goes and the most basic as far as tribalism goes.
Competition and games have been around since we started hitting things with sticks. And we were in much smaller communities then.
It's why you and Ted who has worked at your office for six months barely ever talked but once the new season of "X team" started up and you both realized you were fans, you suddenly bonded. You got that sense of primal tribal unity that perpetuates survival. You know have something to look forward to during your completely unnatural day at the office.
