Eh, I live in Colorado. My two story house does not have air conditioning. The windows are large enough to put box fans in them.
So I do that at night, all night long. Around 6am I have to get up and take them out of the windows and shut everything up.
My house is 68 F right now.
It was 64F at 6am this morning.
Today's high is 85 F.
This is how I stay comfy. Just blow in lots of cold air at night. Some windows opposite the fans blowing in I just leave open so the hot air has an exit.
No problem. Rest of the year I don't have to do this because the weather is cool enough.

Bought my budget window ac unit at Walmart for 40% off during their fall clearance sell back in 2018 for $109. Things still running perfectly 7 years later. I just clean the filter regularly and put it in my shed during the cold seasons. Best purchase i made in years. Keep it running at 62 F during the day, 70 F at night. Never had a hot unbearable day since buying it.

Pulled my freestanding AC out of the storage room today, then carved up some cardboard to block the rest of the window so the hot air won't leak back in.

You could have bought one of those portable AC units - not the tiny ones but the larger ones the size of like a vertical laundry hamper, they're about the same price and you just slap an easily removed (about 2 minutes to put in/take out) tube to the window with a resizable thing and that's it. They work well enough and you'd still have your window if you wanted it.

Europe has a much cooler climate than most of the US, so air conditioning is basically useless except for 2 or maybe 3 months out of the year. Europeans don't understand how hot it gets, even in our northern cities, so they don't understand why everyone in the US uses air conditioning and likes ice in drinks.

I sometimes wish it was more temperate here so we didn't get ass blasted in the summer and winter, but such is life.
