Because they're on the defensive with a fortification advantage; the Russians take far more casualties attacking it than the Ukrainians do defending it. As to why Russia keeps attacking even though they're suffering from it more than Ukraine, my speculation would be a combination of needing to have an image of progress for their civilian population, and wanting to maximize the amount of territory they physically control in the hopes of an eventual frozen conflict, in which case all taken ground basically becomes theirs forever (or a strong bargaining chip for concessions elsewhere, such as lifting sanctions). This approach works if they're able to negotiate a frozen conflict, but it's a gamble; if the war continues their losses will just continue to accumulate at an escalating rate.

Its Ukraine's main supply hub connecting rail links from the Polish border to the frontline.
