It's not that they actually believe these things so much as that they simply do not have the same relationship to truth and lying. They will simply say whatever, whenever, to see if they can get away with it / fool you, and do not feel ashamed or embarrassed in the slightest for getting caught telling the most preposterous lies imaginable.
