The west likes to depict China as a hive mind, and it's true that communism is an ideology almost tailor made for Chinese culture, but the fact is China has a history of being one of the most fractious and divisive and self-warring nations ever to exist. All of Chinese history is one continuous, millenia long civil war. Maoism was all about smoothing over those differences in order to finally bring an end to that inner turmoil. But it could just as soon devolve into warlordism
