Why? This will not win any public support. If they are unarmed they don't pose any threat, you control the region if you are the only military force present.

This is why severe discipline must be imposed in unconventional forces to prevent abuse of power. You are effectively the government in territories you control and must enforce rule of law.

The threat of punishment such as stripping weapons and even summary execution is necessary to prevent non-state military actors from going around robbing/raping/murdering. Killers are not normal people and have to be kept in check to work effectively for a righteous cause.
