Say what you will about French people and French culture, but France is the natural hegemon of Western Europe. At least from a geostrategic point of view. It is the only Western European country with a 100M+ carrying capacity and dual maritime access to the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It occupies a central location on the European Plain with the ability to project power northward into Britain, southward into Spain/Italy/Africa, and westward into Germany and Central Europe.

By comparison, Britain has a smaller carrying capacity, no access to the Mediterranean, and no ability to project land power into Europe. Spain has a smaller carrying capacity and is isolated from the rest of the continent. Italy has a smaller carrying capacity, no access to the Atlantic, and is on the periphery like Spain. Germany, while having a good carrying capacity and central location, lacks access to both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Only France has all three: large carrying capacity, excellent naval projection, and a central location. France is both a maritime and land power. It has access to both the European Plain and the Atlantic/Mediterranean. If the French could acquire a Teutonic spirit, I have no doubt they would unify Western Europe once more.

French culture is great, they are one of the few countries which can boast a fairly old history beginning with the Gauls (most advanced society in Europe outside of the Mediterranean), great contributions both to humanities (great painting and literature and architecture with Gothic) AND sciences (top notch mathematics, significant scientific discoveries, Descartes, Lavoisier etc), good food, good location, has been a major power for over a thousand years and can still call the shots. Do not take this as a dick measuring context cause that's not my focal point, but consider the following: Italy is not doing that great but still currently overall economically better off than Iberia (geedeepee, industrial output, EU net contributions etc) , has been so for a while and has been more geopolitically important (still, not very much so, but within our own league) so for a century and half, despite Spain and Portugal running such large colonial empires for so many centuries while ours was small and short-lived. Germany vs Spain in those regards is an even more obviously striking case.
My point is that if you look at it objectively colonial history doesn't really correlate with current economical/industrial status as leftoids love to claim, it mostly correlates with amounts of ugly brown people who can speak your language.
