Russia has never been able to provide a similar living standard to the West. It has no civilizational model that can compete with the West. It’s like playing a Civ V game where you’re constantly in a Dark Age and pieces of your empire are constantly rebelling and joining a different civilization.

Look at the world objectively. Every country that allied with the US, aligned with the US, was occupied by the US or the CIA flipped a pro-Soviet dictator to a pro-American caudillo is now an economic tiger with a booming middle class and a cultural power. And every country that allied with Russia, aligned with Russia, was occupied by Russia or the KGB did a little regime overthrow is a gray, despotic, corrupt, hopeless craphole.
That’s just the truth. Where are the Russian South Koreas, Chiles, Germanys and Japans? Because Russia has basically negative soft power and isn’t capable of enticing countries to play for Team Russia on the world stage, it’s constantly invading, ruining everything and forcibly Russifying populations. St. Petersburg is nice. Moscow is nice. The rest of Russia is a wasteland.
