In general, they're probably better at being funny than conservatives. It fits their personality traits better. Their problem is the need to inject their gospel and holy message in everything they do. It's hard to be funny when you're preaching.

The only late night host in the past decades that wasn't a complete fuckup is Craig Ferguson. And they replaced him with James Corden.
Late night talk shows are obsolete, just like TV channels themselves.
