there is a long line of false messiahs in judaism, its how christianity started. the lubavicher rebbe is just the most current one. If you look at the behaviors of chabadniks you see them developing rituals and lines of thinking that parallel what one can imagine early christianity did, its actually very interesting from an anthropological perspective.

But here are some important points.
1. orthodox judaism considers these people heretical

This phenomina seems to happen when a religious teacher is so beloved by his students that they cannot handle his death, so they start saying he was the messiah and that actually he is secretly still alive. It has happened before and will happen again. Its just a jewish tendency.

Remember according to them the messiah has come, and so certain events must unfold for them to retain this point of view. So they will naturally intuitively try to get political power and influence to make it occur to keep their delusion intact.

its not possible to prove or disprove. you can just see striking similarities. They have progressed from him being the messiah, to him being still alive, and some are even saying the messiah will be god (implying that he is god). Also some think the third temple will be in new york.

In judaism the messiah is not a specific person who will then do various things. messiah is a title for the person who does the things. and so if the things are not done, that person is not the messiah, as simple as that. in judaism it is believed that the thing preventing the messiah from coming is evil and wickedness among the jews. the rebbe was always encouraging his followers to do their best to help the messiah come by being good. the messiah must be of the line of david, not only did he point out that he was not, but he pointed out he has not done the things the messiah will do, such as create world peace or gather all the jews in israel. These are also why jews maintain that jesus was not the messiah.

By even the most basic of religious views no religious jew could mistake him for the messiah.
