The said base and it's "commieblocks" were largely abandoned after 1992 and it's now reminiscent of Chernobyl, due to Wittstock's government and even German upper government at large never doing anything with that territory. Buildings crumbled with time and everything got overgrown by trees, bushes, grass, etc.
I visited that place a couple times in the 80's, during military parades, but we as a family never lived there, instead staying in Wittstock proper.
