A lot of anime and manga pulls from older mythology or Japanese history, like there's a Momotaro vs. oni show this season (it's kind of dull and I'll probably drop it, but the same legends show up in better franchises too)
There's no denying the immense influence of US media in the occupation period, or of D&D on Japanese fantasy. Japan just does it better, and modern Japanese culture is still Japanese culture y'know?
