I don't want to be asleep to the threat of totalitarianism, but at the same time acting like there is a tyrant around every corner can become a self fulfilling prophecy. I do think there is more support for dictatorship among all groups, but it is less ideological as you point out, it is more of a kind of spite and desire to harm people who disagree with them. Maybe one day there will be fascist and communist militias fighting eachother and oppressing the population, but it will be almost nothing like the 20th century, they won't even know what nazi or commie means. Still, the threat of the public becoming a divided and angry force remains.
