He signed a 12 month contract for citizenship for him and his family so they can access everything with no need for years of residency, language tests etc. He wasn't "sent to fight for Putin". He didn't have to do it, he chose to do it. There are lots of foreigners settled in Russia who haven't signed contracts nor do they need to. He wanted to speed up the process and skip years of requirements.

He's currently at an armoured vehicle maintenance depot about 100km behind the frontline but obviously inside the Ukraine itself. I saw a video of him there fixing armour plating on an IFV with a mentor in tow and using Russian phrases. He's happy doing the work and is still in training for the basic duties and is attached to an engineer team.

His skills are mechanical in nature and is also an experienced trained welder so he can essentially skip the specialised training section. He's been put to work maintaining the combat vehicles when they roll back in on trucks or trains from actions on the front. Especially as the front continues moving and new bases need pushing forward to keep the supply line going especially as the front joins together for unified pushes. So he'll probably be building supply hubs soon aswell as the general battle rapidly grows and expands in the pivotal fight underway around the Pokrovsk-Kostantinovka city sectors that will decide the outcome of the region as a whole.
