Bill Clinton. He got in because George HW Bush had a small recession during his term after trying to rebalance the economy following the excess of the Reagan era. Clinton ran an economics first campaign and steered clear of pro- union or class rhetoric, while Bush faceplanted on tv by not knowing the price of milk or how supermarket scanners work.
After Clinton's big win the pollsters and campaign strategists like James Carville looked like geniuses and had lots of power within the party. And they basically just ran the Democratic party as Republican-lite on economics ever since, because they were so happy to get out of the class warfare box the GOP had had them in for the previous 25 years. That's also why they were so utterly unprepared for Trump going after the working class vote. They thought they just had to get some union endorsements every election time and the working class would be there while the Dems focused most of their coins efforts on the middle class.
