Like anon said its huge and loads of land everywhere, in many cases for a cheap price. It all depends on your price range. I got sort of a dream one day of spending a million SEK to buy 180 hectares or so up north - totally doable btw. Your country might be too cold for that, maybe if you could travel closer to the Mediterranean for winter. It's definitely possible in the US, but you still need some money for gas. Sven you live next endless forests go there and and prepare for winters and have backup plans and money on your account. Even better if you can buy a pieace of cheap land in the middle of wilderness. I thought about doing vanlife with a box truck build. I'd go crazy living in something the size of a parking space where I can't stand up. My idea was to use a camp toilet to shit in a bag, and piss in bottles to just throw out with my regular trash. Water storage is always an issue, I wanted mine to have a shower/bathroom but just not use it often unless needed. The gym memberships and laundromats are very useful. The gas cost would be my biggest bill, but there are some cabovers that get around 20mpg so not too bad. There's a ton of room in box trucks, the wet room is just to occupy space with something that could be useful in some situations. It probably wouldn't often get used considering it would use up all the water supply. One idea was to stay near clean enough lakes and just fill my water with lake water. Knew a guy who did this for a few years in a box truck.
He had a couple of tricks to make it work.
First no exterior windows or doors.
Second he put the logo of a fictional sewer services company on the side that he maintained a fake website for.
Third he left some fast food wrappers and high vis vests in the front to make it look like a work van complete with the usual "no tools left in this van overnight" stickers on the back.
Basically he made it look like a company truck.

Inside he had a full on apartment basically. Tiny but functional. He also had a full on black water tank in it in addition to a clean water tank and a hefty battery fed by solar panels on the roof or a couple of plugs.

When he needed to empty the blackwater tank he'd put on a set of overalls, a high vis vest and a helmet then set up some cones around a drain and run a hose from the tank into the drain and just stand there next to it.
Nobody ever bothered him and people didn't question the truck.

That’s what I did. I let go of the living innawoods pipe dream and settled for a little college on the edge of the woods in a small village in the orbit of a bigger town (100k pop. maybe). I garden, walk to the farmers market a couple of times per week, go hiking through the first, hunt, fish, forage, read, and I built a little art studio on the property where I go to and fuck around with a canvas or some clay or whatever every now and then. I work from home for a college and teach online lectures, which is usually a few hours per week and I do other random creative or handyman type things to supplement my income. I try to involve myself in the community, and the local church even though that’s not my denomination and it’s good. That’s basically my life.

I’ll be honest. It’s difficult for me and I do regret it sometimes because I’m single, without kids, and an ambitious person. So I often think “why the hell am I not out being an investor in New York or entrepreneur in the Bay Area or politician in Washington?” but my life now is infinitely better than the average run-of-the mill wagie life in some 2nd rate urban hive somewhere. And it wasn’t all that expensive. I bought my house for $300k which isn’t expensive at all in Northeastern America. I’m young too. If I can do it, you can do it.

Look into black diesel. It's just used motor oil mixed with a small amount of gas/petrol to get the consistency of diesel. All you have to do is filter it well. Less chemicals/processing than biodiesel and in my area there's more of it available from auto mechanics than the gross cooking oil that hippies scoop up.

Just throw 2 hub motors on the front or rear, easiest electric conversion ever. Whole "engine" is contained within the wheel. There are some seriously powerful hub motors and something with that much cargo space can hold a pretty big battery compared to the bikes they're made for.

Kek as someone who lives in the desert and does both, it can be done. It's certainly a challenge though and involves capturing and storing a LOT of water when it does rain, i've close to 100,000L of rainwater storage, combine that with really efficient use of water when you're growing to minimise evaporation (I use a lot of wicking beds), and just generally being mindful of water usage, it works. You need around 5k-10k litres of water per person per year for general usage, the rest goes on vegetables/fruit/animals. I just recently grew right through a legit 9 month drought no worries. And even though it gets cold, you don't have the real cold of northern winters so your growing seasons are longer, and there's a lot of stuff I can grow year round.

innawoods etc is obviously more comfy and gives you better access to certain resources, but if desert is what you've got, or what you can afford, a man can make it work.

Most modern people facing this sort of dilemma are just better off going full turtle mode where ever they currently live. The whole live in a dirt floor shack off grid life is such a one off.
