Honestly would go a long way towards helping with the birth rates. This isn't even an insane ask, other countries already do this.
Canada, for example, can give up to 18 MONTHS of maternity/paternity leave. One year for the mother, and that remaining 6 months can be split between the mom and the dad as needed. Because they determined that kids that were properly cared for in their first year of life were better adjusted, less likely to turn to crime, healthier, and performed better in education. It was just cheaper for the system to give them that extra push towards being functioning members of society than it was to try and ignore the problem and pay for it in half a dozen different ways for the rest of that person's life.

America would rather nuke itself into oblivion than ever so much as attempt such a thing on US soil, but its nice to dream.

Few years ago I broke up with a girlfriend, we had a bunch of problems that lead to this but few months later we hooked up and she got pregnant.
Immediately I called for an abortion, I said I didn't love her, I don't want the kid and convinced her. We caught pregnancy very early on and went with medical (pill form) abortion, cost me like 400-500eur.

I thought well, that's that, it's over with. But now... it still haunts me. I still think about it at random times, not often, but sometimes. I count how many years and months old the kid would've been, would it have been really that bad?
