In January 2025, Eluzur Rumpler, a member of the Lev Tahor sect with both Israeli and U.S. citizenship, was arrested in El Salvador upon arrival from Guatemala. He was subsequently extradited to Israel based on charges of mistreating students at educational centers, forcing them to undress and beating them.
Also in January, Jonathan Cardona, a Guatemalan national and Lev Tahor member, was arrested in El Salvador and extradited to Guatemala. He faces charges of rape, abuse of minors, and human trafficking in the form of forced pregnancy.
In February 2025, Yoel Alter, an Israeli national and senior member, was arrested in Guatemala on human trafficking charges for which he is wanted in Mexico. The Belgrade News notes that three others were also arrested, including Nissen Yehuda Malka and Yoel Goldman in Guatemala City, and Chaim Malka and Dinkel Avrohom who were handed over by Belizean authorities.
