It was when p2p file sharing and piracy first started, Napster was one of the first and the one with most name recognition. Musicians were butthurt because they couldn't get money for their shitty music and Metallica was most butthurt and it became national headlines.

anons are all poorfags who pirate (i'll assume you are as well) so they don't give a shit but it was the beginning of the end for the music industry and the film/tv industry as well
it's the reason there are no mid budget movies any more and everything is an IP
it's the reason we have to wait three years in between seasons of 6 episode shows
it's the reason your favorite band has to jack up ticket and merch prices
sure, by that time Metallica wasn't hurting financially, but p2p killed the little midbudget artists
i was in a shitty hardcore band in the mid 90s through early 2000s and remember being confused as hell when i saw two of our EPs on napster. you could literally buy our 7"s from us for 3 dollars and people were still stealing them.
>i wasn't going to buy the album/buy the movie ticket anyway
sure you weren't, wagie. that's all we spent our paychecks on in the 90s and early 2000s
it is what it is though.

He was right for the wrong reasons, but the consequences of software like Napster or kazaa was an inevitability. Technology has done very little to actually improve the distribution of art. Its devalued to the point where people barely want it as a hobby, and they sure as fuck dont want to spend the extra money to be able to witness art in person when they can just endlessly absorb it in the comfort of their home.
Tl;dr Lars was a pussy bitch who just wanted money and didn't really care that art was going to being passed around like a slave hooker.

ever since this incident, how many other musicians have come out as butthurt as this kike about money being stolen from him?

10? 20? maybe? can anyone list other musicians who expressed a similar sentiment - something that could potentially alienate a portion of their own fan base?

FUCK WHEN YOU THiNK ABOUT IT

Not at all. The argument at the time was that piracy was convenient and that the music industry should pivot to a more convenient distribution model to remain profitable. They've finally done that with streaming. If they were still trying to shut it down WRT digital content they would still be in the wrong.

I don't think so. For the musician it's possible to make a living through donations and performances. Maybe not as rich of a living, but easily a good living for a mega star. The only people hurt by free distribution of music are the executive class that any musician should hate anyway, the men around the musician who need a cut off the top (and usually take more than that besides).

The societal effects of trying to maintain this ludicrous system of intellectual property are absolutely retarded as well, the enforcement mechanisms are mendacious and intrusive. And it's bad for music. Music tends to riff off other music. But intellectual property adds an extra hurdle where if some jury thinks your song is a little too close to a different song, you can get nailed by the law. What is the benefit of that?

Making money off of music this way was a temporary thing. it started with records and basically ended with Napster, we're just seeing the lingering grasp of power. Prior to records nobody would think to keep sheet music sacred this way since it was performance that people paid for, not the idea.

Basically all of the intellectual property regime has lost the pretense of common good. Nowhere do we see this legal fiction propping up artists or new ideas, we only see it propping up corporations rehashing old ones.

theft is wrong. The only reason people downloaded music or whatever for free was because there was no penalty. But you can't hide from judgement. The wages of sin is death. Its the 8th commandment.

I say this not as someone who has never downloaded shit for free. I was the worst of the worst. I spent more money on the computer hardware to put the shit on. If I just took that money I spent on hardware I probably could have saved money just buying the crap I wanted instead of pirating it.

As I got older I started to notice that for whatever reason I did not get away with it. The guilt crept in and there are a whole ton of people who failed to create an online start up because of piracy.

Pirating is beneficial to music scenes. Without pirating I never would have discovered 90% of the music I listen to today, which means I'd never have paid for concert tickets or merch, or got other people into the band. It's not like I'm going to go out and buy a terabyte worth of music. I'd just end up streaming random shit from youtube instead.

Early-ish internet days, Napster sprung up, household name where even your tech-illiterate parents were downloading music p2p style by just searching and clicking. Everybody loved it, the world was a happy place because of it, and then cucked Metallica sued and got it shut down. At the time, the digital rights scene wasn't nearly as defined and expansive as it is now, it was all a new technology.

but i collected a decent catalog of music from different artists I would have NEVER HEARD if it weren't for napster

Prior to Napster making peer to peer music downloads fast, easy and relatively safe, people had to buy $20 CDs at music stores to listen to music.
Napster and the copycats it spawned popularized music piracy. It changed the industry almost overnight from one reliant on CD sales to one reliant on concert ticket sales.
Streaming on youtube and spotify have rendered Napster antiquated, but at the time it was mindblowing stuff. Exposed me to a lot of new music.
Back to Metallica, Lars spoke to Congress about banning it. Record companies were suing random people for seeding downloads for hundreds of thousands of dollars to try and deter others from downloading.
It was too little, too late.
Napster would eventually get shutdown and then try to go legit by doing profit sharing with record companies, but there were too many copycats like limewire at that point.

i pirate music because i want a digital copy of music i can listen to without any internet connection, and use as I see fit for my personal consumption.
The music industry has made it nearly impossible to even pay to listen to music in such a fashion.
If I pirate music, I can do so without my privacy being violated, or signing retarded end user licenses that actively remove ownership of the music purchased while shoving ads at me for accessing SOMETHING I PAID FOR.
So the music industry has l left me with pirating as practically the only way to actually own and enjoy music.
The only exceptions to this are non-signed musicians, who release their music independently... and I pay for their music, because they don't create excessive privacy breaches, access difficulties, or time stealing hurdles to actually enjoying their music

>"Oh! Susanna" is a folk song by Stephen Foster (1826โ€“1864)

>It was first published by W. C. Peters & Co. in Cincinnati in 1848.[5]
>1848
>Blackface minstrel troupes performed the work, and, as was common at the time, many registered the song for copyright under their own names.
>As a result, it was copyrighted and published at least twenty-one times[6] from February 25, 1848, through February 14, 1851.[3]
>Foster earned just $100 ($2,774 in 2016 dollars[7]) for the song,[8] but its popularity led the publishing firm Firth, Pond & Company to offer him a royalty rate of two cents per copy of sheet music sold,[3] convincing him to become the first fully professional songwriter in the United States

This has not been my experience, again since the 80s of collecting and playing records. I have had more compact discs fail than records. They only problem with records is dust, or scratches. But I have an audiophile level system, Project Carbon turntable with an Ortofon Blue cart, and KEF Q750 speakers. If I get a noisy record I run it through my record cleaner, makes it like new. If your playing your records on some crappy Crossly turntable yeah it's going to ruin your records. What is your personal experience wit LP records? Again I've been collecting and playing them since the 80s with no degradation of sound.

Everyone in high school hated Metallica and I didn't even know why. It's because the kids downloaded free music and Metallica killed it. Things were different in those days. It was common to record songs onto cassette tapes straight off the radio on a boombox and record tv shows and movies onto vhs tapes from live broadcasts to keep forever. It was your right for sitting through the ads and possibly paying for cable I guess. Now we live in the streaming subscription era where you pay monthly for access or have ads to have access for free but you don't own it. Just different values or the Wild West before it was tamed. No one cared if you recorded a song on a tape off the radio and gave it to a friend, but corporate interests kicked into gear when someone could share the song they recorded with 100,000 of their closest friends.

I have a lot of classical records and they sound wonderful, you're just an idiot with no real experience with a good hi-fi system. But because Classical music is typically uncompressed I prefer CD with classical for the low noise floor. Vinyl really shines with rock and jazz records because of the higher compression, and I think vinyl masters just sound better than the digital versions, which are much more compressed.

digital storage is so cheap that having music in FLAC isn't an issue any longer.

The time signature for Metallica's "I Disappear" is primarily 4/4 time, also known as common time. The song is composed at a moderate tempo of 124 beats per minute. While the core structure of the song is in 4/4, the song also features sections in other time signatures, such as 3/4 and 2/4, with the heaviest parts reverting to 4/4 and then transitioning to 2/2 (double-time).
You can listen to the song to hear the different time signatures:

musicians -- all artists, really -- need to be getting paid for their work. They don't need to be multi-millionaires, but they damn sure shouldn't be struggling to keep themselves alive while giving the driving force of culture to a civilization.
>derp enter sandman isn't culture lmao lmao
it sort of is. All art is.
Either way at the end of the day we live in a culture that flouts art and creativity -- things that are extensions of God. We live in an antinatalist society that believes there is no value in artistic endeavors or anything that makes people feel a deeper sense of consciousness. Instead everyone wants to be practical and pragmatic. Everyone wants to be utilitarian as much as possible in life and sees no value in somethign that doesn't readily provide tangible value. It's when people think downloading music is A-OK, but have no problem plunking down $1000 on a fucking phone so you can watch more internet porn.

the capacity to create excess value allows for the time and energy of a pure artist to exist. artistic endeavors existed well before a person could exist by only being an artist. Culture and art are only tied to one another if the art actually reflects upon the culture. However an artist should not be able to demand payment from those that they do not reflect. The struggle to produce art is what makes it beautiful in the first place. Removing the very motive of and behind the art robs it of its cultural significance.

The reason why popular music has become so damn disgusting now is precisely because it is a reflection upon what the artists are struggling to achieve. It isn't about attaining cultural relevancy or perceiving beauty (at least popularly) it has become about being alone, wanting to fuck, and attaining money. These are ridiculously low levels of awareness. They are a direct reflection upon the current culture and state of humanity in all of their disgustingness. The culture creates the art, Not the art creates the culture.

No, he wasn't. And Metallica's only good, non-corporate-driven albums are Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning (and even that had Escape in it). Honorable mention for the song Battery, but that's it.

"Blackened" by Metallica features a complex and constantly shifting time signature throughout the song, making it a challenging piece for musicians. The song utilizes a variety of time signatures, including 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 6/4, and even 5/8 in certain sections. These changes in time signature, combined with the fast tempo and intricate guitar work, contribute to the song's intense and dynamic feel.
Here's a breakdown of some of the time signature changes in "Blackened":

>Intro: The song begins in 4/4, then shifts to 3/4, then back to 4/4, before moving into 5/4.
>Verse: The verse section typically features a 6/4 time signature.
>Chorus: The chorus is generally in 4/4, but there are also measures in 5/4.
>Dual Guitar Midsection: This section is particularly complex, with a pattern of 4/4, 2/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 2/4.
>Solo: The slow solo section is in 4/4, while the fast solo section has a measure in 2/4 before returning to 4/4.
>Outro: The song concludes with the 7/4 riff that was introduced earlier.

The song also features subtle shifts and variations within these established time signatures, as well as some unexpected measures like a measure in 5/8 during the solo section. The overall effect is a constantly evolving and unpredictable musical landscape that keeps the listener engaged and on their toes.

What if the composer isn't a performer ?
>He can charge the performer
What if his performer doesn't make an impact but another guy hears the song and makes it famous and make a shit ton of money ?
Carl Perkins wrote and performed Blue Suede Shoes but Elvis made it famous and according to you Perkins should just go drive a truck while Elvis gets rich
How many composers can you spend like that before you run out of them

They absolutely ruined people by itemizing downloads and applying fines for each one leaving some foreverin debt over goy tunes. I downloaded a bunch of shit personally and never got in trouble ever. Later found out the anti piracy campaign clip that played before every movie in the early 2000s had infact no rights to the music and it was deemed pirated.

Who? Specifically. This is what I mean, they a big show of doing something, and acted like we were all about to have it happen to us, but life went on, and we are still doing it to this very day. An email from your ISP is the worst thing that you know of that ever even happened to anyone you know.

My point is that they were afraid they'll lose record revenue bcs Napster
You say "they still made money from touring and merchandise".
Now, I'm unironically and genuinely asking, are you pro communism or something because I find it baffling how Americans say that commies should be killed while simultaneously wanting people who make good money to give that money up just because they don't have enough
Should Musk give up Tesla revenue since he has a good deal with NASA

Imo a song with 50 bars of 4/4 with 10 bars of other time signatures is still in 4/4 and the most important thing is the verse and then chorus because you can do anything on the intro
>Rather unnecessary
I've read somewhere that on Justice particularly they did it deliberately to show off, their words apparently. Masters of rhythm and shit
Producers said that sound engineering was a mess because they did it themselves but you probably know that
There's a YT video with the entire Justice remastered with bass properly brought forward
