In the 90s there was not really an alternative if you wanted to go onto the WWW. Chromium's dominance is kind of a problem but fortunately there has been lots of pushback on the parts of it tailored for jewgle instead of W3C standards. Amp for example was shilled hard as a jewgle vendor lock-in feature and it didn't really take off.
It is still a problem to have browser engine monopoly. I hope Servo gets somewhere even though it's meant to be embedded in other apps. Ladybird might be OK too, we'll see.
