Russia was always a shithole compared to any other western nation. It was always authoritarian state where paesants could be killed on a whim and were poor and alcoholic.

Imperialism. Expansion as its only means of survival but it created an unnatural entity that can never be a functioning nation state. Its vast distance always makes control with anything less that top down tyranny nigh impossible.
