If he was fully committed to spending his money on it? Yes. He has the money to basically force it to happen if he wants. Most of the setbacks are because he has damaged Space-X's rep and he's been using worse engineers over the past 2 to 3 years. A lot of the talent left. Money though could fix that if he wanted to spend it. The problem is he is paranoid like all billionaires. So he will likely piss around being cheap and slow down progress until his financial situation just gets worse or he dies. So there is a real risk that it never happens because is both a genius and a moron at the same time.

I remember a few years ago maybe even last decade where there was more of a fever pitch about this and the general consensus in the threads and articles being posted is that we neither have the technology nor the biological makeup to survive for long periods of time outside the Earth's atmosphere
I don't mean to be a party pooper or doomer, but the human body starts dying and degrading pretty quickly when taken outside our natural habitat, even when you try to replicate Earth like conditions let alone subject it to the rigors of life outside the atmosphere and gravity of Earth's magnetic field

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation%2018&version=NIV

But yeah, wait til you find out what America traded the "aliens" for the advanced tech. "Protect and serve the American citizen" The issue is that the other nations allowed and in some cases encouraged this. Anything freemasonic and democratic needed to be snuffed out centuries ago, so that is why all nations, including Russia will be judged, though not as severely as the great prostitute who sits on many waters.

Glowies, you can call this treason, it may be a schizo larp or a sick joke, but obviously even your freemasonic constitutional heroes like George Washington would do horrible, unspeakable things to you if they were alive today. Unreasonable search and seizure indeed...Again, no worries, ya'll know who I am, I will not interfere physically; the global Judas still has a bit further to go to fulfill its sordid destiny. I would recommend taking no part in further oppressing me or my bloodline; even my prayers to God cannot save you and your bloodlines from His retaliation, and indeed I do not waste prayers on trying to protect you when I could be protecting your victims. Get out while you still can glowies.

Musk owns a AI company.
Owns a boring company.
Robotic company.
Battery company.
Solar company.
ALL of those things will be needed to colonize Mars.
The best option is to live underground the weather is shit, dust storms, can't breathe. So boring underground will be the easier way to make the first habitats.
Need rockets to get there.
AI and robots to do anything on the surface because space suits look cool but working in them not so much.

In the past some people may have said it would be inevitable, but we can't be so sure anymore.
The tiny risk of some kind of asteroid impact extinction event pales in comparison to the various domestic problems this rock has, which may present a far bigger obstacle to any sort of linear progress.
But if we assume no extraordinary collapse happens then sure, probably this century, but it will take until 2300 AD before there's any real colonization going on across the solar system.

Antarctica is about as colonized as it can be though, without going to the extent of having small nuclear reactors powering food growing structures etc, but nobody is going to bother with that because the rest of the world is easier to grow food on, plus all the conservation weenies.
trying to make something at least partially self sustaining on the mars however would make more sense if you want a permanent settlement, since the resupply distance and time is longer and more complicated.

also, you have to keep in mind the expressed beliefs of people like musk who are the drivers behind the project - that humanity needs to expand beyond earth to ensure its survival.

Mars is objectively easier to colonize than the moon. You can aerobrake on Mars, so the delta v cost is about equivalent. The only difficulty of a Mars mission is the consumable requirement
That downside goes away the second you have an established colony, since Mars actually has hydrogen/water, and even soil that can grow plants once you leech the chlorates out of it.

The moon is a shit place to colonize, since it has almost no resources, and is covered in hyper asbestos.

Is Interplanetary vehicle shitting intergalactic vehicles going to ever be a thing?
Yes it's a certainty, however the bad news is you have to wait another thousand years before necessity makes the mother of invention force people to accept the less-good conditions of living in space, which is a billion times harder than living on the surface of a planet.

Basically you're going to need artificial general super intelligence before interplanetary vehicles become viable.

It's also in the sweet spot of having low enough gravity that you can make an orbital ring using current material tech.
The long term possibilities of Mars are even better than earth. Especially if you keep the darkies from infesting it.
Current estimates are that we could, with current tech, and no fantasy land projects, partially terraform it with an array of nuclear powered satellites projecting an artificial magnetosphere. In less than a hundred years, the surface would be hospitable enough to survive without a pressure suit. Just cold weather gear and supplemental oxygen mask.

won't happen in your lifetime kid, there are a dozen if not more of problems
>human body and gravity
Gravity is much lower than Earth, so will affect your body (Cardiovascular System, Bones and muscles etc) so you will need to work harder(exercise) and take more suppliments just to go by(but won't be enough), that's without 12-14 hours or more of work per day you need to do just to keep the base/colony running
>energy
you will need a nuclear reactor/fusion reactor to have energy there, you can't relied on Solar/wind, there are desert storms that will go on for weeks or more, so Solar will be useless and Wind will be risky duo to powerful winds
>Dust storms
the storms on Mars can cover continents in size and going for months or even more, so you need to survive during those times without backup from Earth
>radiations and resources
have fun mining or doing something outside while there's a storm and you need to wear a suit 12 hours or more duo to radiations and temperatures
Mars is just a dream right now or in the near future, maybe will happen in 50 years or more

i think you're right about small nuclear reactors being necessary. solar might keep small colonies going but as you say, storms can stick around for ages depending on where you are. the experience with the various mars rovers and their solar panels was interesting though.

we dont know what the gravity will do to a body yet. got to be a lot better than over a year in freefall on the ISS though.

wearing a suit is always going to be necessary for outside work. with time the design can be made lighter and easier to be in for longer periods of time. look how long the Apollo EVAs were even in those bulky restrictive suits.
