This post has 14 words
Wow...

I wish I were exaggerating, but this is serious.

This post contains blatant, unmistakable references to well-known Nazi symbolism. And no - this isn't satire. It didn't come from an anonymous meme account or a fringe group.

It came directly from the official Department of Homeland Security (
@DHSgov
) account. Yes, the tweet is real - and that makes it deeply alarming.

Why do I say that?

The caption in the tweet:

"A Heritage to be proud of, a Homeland worth Defending"

contains exactly 14 words, a direct mirror of one of the most infamous slogans in white supremacist history:

"We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children."

This phrase, known as the "14 Words" was coined by David Lane, a member of The Order (also called the Silent Brotherhood) - a white nationalist terrorist group active in the U.S. during the 1980s.

Lane was convicted for his role in the 1984 assassination of Jewish radio host Alan Berg, as well as numerous federal crimes, and was sentenced to 190 years in prison, where he died in 2007.

His slogan became a cornerstone of white nationalist ideology, widely circulated across hate groups, forums, tattoos, graffiti, and coded speech. Another version - Lane's so-called "second 14 words" - reads:

"Because the beauty of the White Aryan woman must not perish from the earth."

The "HH" dog whistle

The sentence in the DHS tweet ends with "Heritage" and "Homeland" both capitalized - a clear HH pairing. In neo-Nazi circles, HH stands for "Heil Hitler."

Often used in combination with 88 (since H is the 8th letter of the alphabet),

"14+88" has become shorthand for the fusion of white supremacist ideology and Nazi allegiance.

These subtle cues - known as dog whistles - are used to signal extremist beliefs while maintaining plausible deniability to the public.

And there's more:

Heritage = Blood

Homeland = Soil

It's a direct allusion to the Nazi slogan "Blut und Boden" ("Blood and Soil") - a fascist doctrine glorifying ethnic purity and the supremacy of the homeland.

This kind of rhetoric is deliberately crafted to sound like a patriotic or cultural appeal - but it's rooted in white ethno-nationalism.

In plain terms: Nazism 卐

"American Progress" and White Colonial Myth

The painting used in the tweet - John Gast's "American Progress" - depicts westward expansion as a noble conquest, with a glowing white figure leading settlers as Indigenous people and animals vanish into the darkness.

This image is not neutral. It has long been criticized as a romanticized portrayal of Manifest Destiny - a concept used to justify the genocide, displacement, and cultural erasure of Native peoples.

To post this image alongside language about "heritage" and "defending the homeland" sends an unmistakable message about which heritage is being honored, and whose homeland is being defended.

Look at the pattern:

14 Words - Mirrors a core white supremacist slogan

Capitalized HH - Reference to "Heil Hitler"

Blood & Soil - Nazi ideology disguised as cultural heritage

Colonial imagery - Celebrates settler violence and Indigenous displacement

Individually, you might dismiss these.

Together, they form a clear, coherent message - one that would be immediately recognizable in extremist circles.

That's exactly how dog whistles function: innocent enough to deflect criticism, unmistakable to those in the know.

So...

Whether it was intentional or the result of gross negligence, the outcome is the same:

A white nationalist message was broadcast under the authority of the U.S. government.

This didn’t come from a fringe actor - it came from DHS. That gives it institutional weight.

I think people should care.

Especially sincere Christians.

And I think people should ask the US government for

1) a full explanation.
2) transparency about the chain of approval.
3) a serious investigation into how and why this was allowed to happen.
